Honest Guidance for Global Property Investors
Our Story
We publish independent guides for expat and international investors, free of developer affiliations or referral arrangements, focused on giving you the information you need to make informed decisions.
Where We Come From
ProperWise started in Boston as a small property resource, went through several iterations, and grew into a focused, independent guide for people buying property outside their home country.
We focus on a specific reader: the expat, the global nomad, the investor looking at Portugal or Japan or Dubai from a distance. Our writers bring direct experience with the details that matter — filing an FBAR, navigating a Fideicomiso — and write from that experience.
We cover the markets, legal frameworks, financing options, and tax structures that matter to cross-border buyers. We write guides that explain what a process actually costs, how long it takes, and what the real risks are.
How We Work
Independent
Our editorial decisions are made independently of developer affiliations, agency referral fees, and other financial relationships. Sponsored content is clearly labelled and held to the same factual standards as our editorial content.
Expert-Reviewed
Country guides are reviewed by a licensed professional in that jurisdiction — attorney, CPA, or accredited broker with direct local experience — before we publish.
Kept Current
Tax and regulatory content is audited quarterly. When laws change — and they do, frequently — we update the relevant guides and date the revision visibly at the top.

Editorial Standards
A few things we take seriously, and which are worth being explicit about:
- Sources: Statistics are cited. We use primary sources where possible — government registries, central bank data, official transaction records — to keep information current and accurate.
- Local review: We publish country-specific legal or tax content only after it has been reviewed by a practitioner licensed or experienced in that jurisdiction. This adds time. It is worth it.
- Conflicts of interest: If a contributor has a personal financial position in a market or company mentioned in an article, it is disclosed at the top. No exceptions.
- Not financial advice: Our guides are informational, meant to complement advice from a qualified property lawyer or tax professional, and we say so directly in any article where that distinction matters.
- Corrections: If something is wrong, we want to know. Use the contact page. We correct factual errors promptly and note the correction in the article.
